Ytterbium doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Yb:YAG) crystal is used in production of short and ultrashort pulse lasers. Wide absorption bandwidth centered at 940 nm makes it well suited to be pumped with laser diodes. High thermal conductivity of Yb:YAG crystal makes it a perfect gain material for high power lasers. Due to its cubic structure the crystal shows homogeneous performance when light goes along [111] cut orientation. 1030 nm emission wavelength is widely used in the photonics field, but also its second harmonic (515 nm) could be efficiently used to pump other crystals like Ti:Sapphire, or even replace the argon ion laser in medical applications.
