Description

Overview
When choosing a circuit breaker, you want a solution that ensures quality, reliability and innovation tailored to your needs. Siemens Energy offers an extensive range of high-voltage circuit breakers designed to protect power grids with dependable performance, proven technology and long service life. The portfolio includes products based on vacuum interruption, self-compression interrupters and stored-energy spring-drive mechanisms and features Zero F-gas Blue products based on clean air and vacuum switching technology.

Key messages
  • Zero F-gases Blue portfolio: clean-air and vacuum switching technology, zero F-gases and zero global warming potential (GWP).
  • Modular, proven platform concept to adapt breakers to specific system and environmental requirements.
  • Solutions available across a broad voltage range up to 1100 kV (portfolio level).

Types and product highlights (table)
Circuit breaker type | Voltage range | Key features
Live tank circuit breakers | 72.5 kV to 1100 kV | Modular design, single- or three-pole operation, porcelain or composite insulator options, optional closing resistors
Dead tank circuit breakers | 72.5 kV to 550 kV | Up to 90 kA interruption, 2-cycle operation, common or separate bases, optional closing resistors, flexible current transformer solutions
Dead tank compact (DTC) | 145 kV and 245 kV | Space-saving design with similar operational flexibility and reliability
Disconnecting circuit breakers (DCB) | 145 kV and 420 kV | Combines switching and disconnecting functions, reduces substation footprint, simplifies system design

Selected product family highlights
  • 3AV1 FG Blue / 3AV1 Blue DT: vacuum-interruption based Blue dead tank breaker, zero greenhouse gases, operates typically at 72.5–145 kV (portfolio).
  • 3AP1 FG / 3AP1 FI / 3AP2/3 FI / 3AP4/5 FI: live-tank and other multipole designs covering from 245 kV up to 800 kV and beyond; variants with one, two or four interrupter units per pole and options for seismic stability, closing resistors and long maintenance intervals.
  • 3AP2 DCB / 3AP1 DCB: disconnecting circuit breaker variants combining breaker and disconnector in one device, offering cost and space savings and single-pole operating mechanisms on separate bases or common bases.

Technology and operation
  • Vacuum interruption principle: vacuum interrupters are used in the 3AV1 Blue portfolio to provide high switching performance, hermetic tightness, zero CO2 or F-gas emissions, sealed-for-life units with very low maintenance and suitability for low temperatures.
  • Self-compression principle: arc-quenching using self-compression (and dynamic self-compression) principles is applied across the 3AP family up to very high voltages; patented and continuously developed technology providing robust arc quenching.
  • Stored-energy spring-drive mechanism: drive concept based on stored-energy springs (opening and closing springs inside the mechanism) giving a simple, robust and reliable drive with low operating energy and long maintenance intervals.

Accessories and digital solutions
  • PSD control unit: reduces overvoltages and supports controlled switching for applications such as capacitor bank and reactor switching, transformer energizing and autoreclosing (features include single/three-phase autoreclosing, configurable software parameters, secure current measurement and station communication protocols).
  • SiCEA01: contact erosion analyzer for determining contact wear through integrated breaking-current calculations; warning and alarm thresholds, ambient range and Ethernet communication.
  • Sensgear®: digital monitoring solution for switchgear and circuit breakers providing real-time monitoring, analytics, weather/GPS/product-specific measurement data and secure cloud transmission to enable condition-based maintenance and faster diagnostics.

Operational & environmental benefits
  • Zero F-gas Blue products enable compliance with environmental regulations while providing proven performance.
  • Modularity and multiple mechanical/electrical configurations provide flexibility to meet site-specific, seismic or low-temperature operational requirements.
  • Long maintenance intervals (examples: maintenance after 25 years for selected designs; maintenance-free claims up to 25 years for some breakers) reduce lifetime operational cost.

Caractéristiques / spécifications techniques
  • Voltage coverage (portfolio): up to 1100 kV (live tank designs), dead tank up to 550 kV, DTC at 145 kV and 245 kV, DCB options at 145 kV and 420 kV.
  • Interruption capability: up to 90 kA for selected dead tank models; interrupter unit counts vary by design (one, two or four units per pole).
  • Temperature / environment: selected products operate across extreme temperature ranges (examples include -60 to +55 °C for certain units and specialized low-temperature designs).
  • Arc-quenching technologies: vacuum interruption (3AV1 Blue), self-compression / dynamic self-compression (3AP family).
  • Drive: patented stored-energy spring-drive mechanism with guaranteed low operating energy cycles (e.g., 10,000 cycles) and maintenance-free intervals for many designs.
  • Environmental: Blue portfolio — zero F-gases, zero GWP, zero toxicity for the switching medium alternatives offered.
  • Auxiliary systems & monitoring: PSD units for controlled switching, SiCEA01 for contact wear evaluation, Sensgear® for digital condition monitoring and cloud analytics.
