Description

Overview
Siemens Energy designs and manufactures Tractronic® traction transformers for rail operators and train manufacturers worldwide. They are engineered to increase train efficiency and performance, provide maximum ratings in a minimum of space, support local content demands for global applications, and ensure high reliability and flexibility.

Technology & design
Compact, light and efficient. Siemens Energy develops and produces traction transformers for rolling stock applications across relevant ratings and voltage levels with a focus on maximum reliability, economic efficiency and safety. Transformers are configured to customer requirements, including dimensions, weights, losses and impedance characteristics, operational cycles and frequency response behavior, and environmental constraints.

Locations & capacity
Single-phase and multi-phase units are available in all capacity ranges up to 15 MVA and, upon customer request, can be supplied above that range. Units can be mounted in machine rooms, under-floor and low-floor applications, or on-roof installations.

Ratings and voltages
  • Frequencies: 16 2/3 Hz to 60 Hz
  • Rated power: up to 15 MVA (and above on request)
  • Operating voltages: 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 12 kV, 15 kV, 25 kV and special voltage levels

Cooling
Cooling units can be integrated in the transformer frame or supplied as separate components to suit space constraints. Flexible selection of cooling fluids is supported, including mineral oil, silicon-based fluids, or ester-based fluids (example: MIDEL 7131) for environmentally friendlier options.

Windings and filters
Integrated smoothing and filter reactors are available. Auxiliary and heating windings can be included per customer specification. Traction windings can serve as network filter reactors.

Monitoring
A modular multisensory monitoring system is available to continuously assess transformer health. New-generation sensors transmit data to local, remote or cloud-based systems. Processed data can be used to optimize operation, adapt behavior via onboard algorithms and improve maintenance intervals and operational costs.

Applications
  • Ultra-light Thinity® design for space- and weight-sensitive applications
  • AC and DC transformers for electric locomotive applications
  • AUX transformers for diesel locomotives
  • Transformers for high-speed trains
  • Transformers for electric multiple units (EMU)
  • Transformers for tram-train applications

Quality & standards
Developed, tested and certified to meet international standards. Examples of complied standards and certifications include:
  • ISO 9001
  • ISO 14001
  • ISO 45001
  • ISO 22163 (IRIS)
  • Welding qualification EN 15085-2
  • Fire protection standard EN 45545 (applied where relevant)

Testing
Comprehensive routine and type tests are performed to ensure reliability. Typical and special tests include:
  • Routine tests on each traction transformer according to EN 60310
  • Type tests according to EN 60310
  • Finite element method (FEM) analysis of eigenfrequencies and stiffness
  • Shock and vibration tests according to IEC 61373
  • Short circuit tests according to DIN EN / IEC 60076-5
  • Noise measurements according to EN 60076-10
  • EMV investigations and special tests on request
