Mitsui Seiki introduces 5-axis CNC laser drilling machine for high-speed, precision holemaking in tough alloys
[FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ – APRIL 2008] Mitsui Seiki has launched “VLD-300” a small, vertical, Nd:YAG laser drill bit machine for 12-in. cube parts (300 mm x 300 mm x 300 mm in X, Y, Z axes). This machine was developed collaboratively with several aerospace engine component manufacturers who expressed a need for a higher-speed and more accurate professional laser-drilling machine than what was currently available on the market. It’s common for some workpieces, primarily jet engine high temperature alloy parts, to require about 3,000 small diameter cooling airflow holes – each at a different angle – to be drilled in a non-contact manner. Laser is often the best option for speed and to minimize material stress. Inconel, Waspalloy, Hastalloy, and nickel-based titanium alloys are the typical materials.
After three years in research and development, the VLD-300 offers positioning accuracy and repeatability in X, Y, Z-axes of 0.00004" (0.001 mm). A axis positioning accuracy is ±6 arc seconds; repeatability ±3 arc seconds. C-axis accuracy is ±4arc seconds; repeatability ±2 arc seconds. X, Y, Z-axes cutting feed rate is 0.004 ~ 787" (0.1 ~ 20,000 mm) X, Y, Z-axes acceleration rate is 1.5g.
Mitsui Seiki partnered with a European laser company for the Nd:YAG version of this new machine. The VLD-300 is designed to also work with CO2, diode pump, and manufacturer of fiber lasers for different aerospace and other industry applications, such as certain electronics, medical, and automotive parts. |

The single-cut type shear (from 160 to 500 tons) prevents loss of metal and distortion. Blades do not need to be changed.

V600 Drilling System
The V600 drilling system is suitable for structural steel fabricators with a limited floor space. The operator loads the drilling table with several profiles behind each other, after which the horizontal boring unit provides one or more profiles with the programmed hole pattern. By drilling holes through both flanges/sides or by rotating a profile it is possible to professional drill the material on all sides. Besides drilling the machine can also carry out thread tapping. A vertical hydraulic clamp, which clamps the product to the table during drilling, is fixed at the front of the drilling cabin. For tool changing, the drilling unit is provided with an automatic tool changers. After replacing a drill the length of the new tool is automatically measured and before starting the drilling process the web and flange height will be measured automatically. The holes in the flanges can be positioned with regard to the centre of the measured flange height or the actual web height.

The concept of Unicom 6000 is based on a moving table with integrated carousel turning station and an interface that can receive pallets of up to 2.500 mm in diameter. The table movement is designated as Y-axis and it runs underneath a traverse with cross industrial slide and suppliers of spindle carrier. The automatism of this machine transforms a normal pillar-type professional drill into a versatile and economical drilling centre, which can work even without the presence of the operator, except for the upload and download of the profile.
The unit enables the automatic and precise advancement of the profile, the programming of the velocity and of the acceleration of both ways of the carriage. The drill has a pneumatic jaw with Millimetric regulation of the position of the punches and it also has a pump for the micro-lubrification of the centre tool. The operation of up and down load of the profile is rapid and the execution of the entire program takes place without the presence of the operator.

HD is a numerically controlled drilling unit, with a rigid framework, designed for fast working of all types of professional profiles, flat bars, angle sections, rectangular tubes, etc. up to 1200 x 600 mm.

For the V603M, V613M and V630M drilling system the positioning of a profile is carried out by a machine integrated feeder rolls positioning equipment.
Both, the V603M as well as the V630M, are executed with one vertical and two horizontal servo-controlled drilling lines. Therefore profiles can be drilled simultaneously in both flanges and in the web. With the rotating drilling unit of the V613M profiles can be drilled vertically as well as horizontally. This system can operate independently for long periods due to the automatic tool changers.
Combine with other systems
The drilling systems can be combined with a horizontal bandsawing machine, a hydraulic numbering line and/or a beam coping system. For further automation of the pre-fabrication a Voortman shot blaster can be added to the production center. Therefore one operator can centrally control all these machines for drilling, sawing and shot blasting.
Software
Each drilling system is provided with a computer control, which can be integrated in the company’s network, so that DSTV- and DSTV+-data can be directly downloaded, from system files within the company database, to the drilling system. Also software to compose production batches will be installed. |
