An asynchronous motor has a lower rotational speed than the stator field which drives it. This latter is referred to as slip speed.
These motors are used in transportation and industry where high power is needed. They also are found in some home appliances.
A single-phase asynchronous motor has a capacitor or a starting ring to ensure rotation in the right direction. Three-phase versions are used for high power. Starting can be by star-delta switch. Dedicated electronics can ensure starting, as well as speed control and braking, if the motor has no electromechanical brake.
Most are squirrel-cage motors, offering modest performance at start-up. Wound rotors with a double cage or deep notches are better in this domain. Since Joule-effect losses in the rotor are proportional to slippage, a quality motor will have little slip and a good power factor. Torque and nominal speed are determined by the number and arrangement of the contacts.
Choice will depend on nominal rotational speed, torque, output power, inertia, protective index and shaft orientation (horizontal or vertical). Take into account power network regulations.
