Hollow-shaft encoders are designed with a bored through-hole or blind-bore at the center, and mount directly onto a shaft or axle. They convert the shaft's angular position or displacement into an analog or digital code.
Hollow-shaft encoders are designed to be mounted behind rotating parts, such as brushless motors, stepper motors, fans, cranes, elevators and other automated devices. They are commonly used on servo motors in order to provide position, motion and displacement feedback for automation purposes.
The hollow-shaft encoder is designed to be mounted directly onto the drive shaft, secured using a clamp, feather key, set-screw, press-fit or adhesive. The advantage of the hollow-shaft design is that there are no couplings. Those with through-holes can be mounted at any convenient position along the shaft, while blind-bore types are generally designed to be mounted on short motor shafts.
When selecting a hollow-shaft encoder, be sure to determine the exact diameter of the shaft or axle in question. The shaft's rotational speed (RPM) is another important factor.
