A processor card is any card holding a processor. Industrial versions are often embedded cards performing most computer functions. This is referred to as a single-card or single-board computer (SBC). The different formats include VME, compactPCI, compactPCI Express, stackable PC/104, PC/104 Plus, EPIC and EBX. Connectors enable either rack mounting or insertion into a PC motherboard slot.
Embedded processor cards are found in networking, medical devices and military equipment. They perform the functions of an ordinary computer in a compact, specialized configuration, protected against harsh industrial environments.
These cards use processors such as Atom, x86, PowerPC, Freescale, ARM and multi-core types. In most cases, they cannot accept expansion cards or be linked to a hard drive. In contrast, they often can be equipped with memory modules, such as SIMM or DIMM, and include high-performance networking connections.
Choice will depend on chipset, platform operating system, card format, inputs and outputs and available networking ports. Kits and targeted development tools can shorten delivery time.
