A touchscreen is a computer peripheral operated by touch, eliminating the need for a mouse or other pointing device. A virtual orientation grid serves as a direct graphic interface, responding to the touch of a finger or a stylus.
Smartphones, PDAs, GPS units, tablet computers and similar devices use touchscreens. Larger versions are found on ticket dispensers, ATMs and computers. They make computer operation simpler and more intuitive in factories and other settings.
Resistive screens use four, five or eight wires. Five-wire versions are more durable, continuing to operate despite scratches or chemical contact.
Infrared screens react to the interruption of light rays by a finger or stylus. They are very sturdy and do not suffer wear, since no pressure on the screen is required. However, accidental activation is a problem.
In capacitive systems, the user is part of the conductive circuit. They cannot be used while wearing a glove or with a non-conducting object. The screens are bright, but the conductive film on their surface is subject to degradation by repeated contact. Anticipated developments include a non-contact sensing layer covered by a protective glass pane.
Surface wave screens need no additional layer of material. Multipoint screens can handle operations requiring two fingers or simultaneous use by more than one person. Some screens are sensitive to the degree of applied pressure.
Choice will depend on screen size and resolution, as well as selection of a technology suitable for intended use.
