A transducer converts one form of energy into another. Often, one of the pair is electrical. This can take the form of a sensor converting a physical value into an electrical signal or an activator operating in the reverse direction.
These devices are used to measure physical parameters or to generate a mechanical action.
Acoustic transducers like loud speakers and hydrophones produce sound waves. Inversely, a microphone generates an electrical signal based on an acoustic input. These devices use an electromagnet attached to a diaphragm, or a piezoelectric element.
Electromechanical transducers, e.g., motors and relays, produce movement. In contrast, alternators convert movement into electrical energy. Pressure transducers react to the movement or deformation of an element, which alters one of its physical characteristics, such as inductance or resistance.
A thermoelectric (thermocouple) device produces a voltage proportional to temperature. The resistance of a resistive platinum probe varies with temperature. The Hall-effect magneto-electric version converts a magnetic field into voltage. With a current probe, the current produces a magnetic field in a conductor, resulting in current-to-current conversion. Other transducers include optical and magnetostrictive types.
