A capacitive level sensor measures the level of a liquid or a loose solid in a container.
ApplicationsCapacitive level sensors are used in industry to measure the level of conducting and non-conducting liquids, high-viscosity liquids and loose solid material in a continuous manner. They also can be used with slurries and to detect liquid interface levels.
TechnologiesA sensing electrode and the wall of the container form two plates of a capacitor, the material between them acting as a dielectric. Capacitance varies with the level of the fill material, which alters the dielectric. This change produces an electrical output signal.
If the container is not a conductor, a reference electrode must be installed along its inner wall. Continuous measurement requires that the sensor be mounted vertically within the container and parallel to its walls.
Choice will depend on the constituent material and height of the container, and on the characteristics of the material whose level is to be measured, be it liquid or a granular solid.
