An ohmmeter measures the resistance of a component or an electrical conductor.
ApplicationsThese devices are found in laboratories and testing facilities. They are used to check the quality of soldering and the integrity of cables. Electricians use them for inspection and preventive maintenance in industrial facilities.
TechnologiesOhmmeters measure electrical resistance by using an integrated current generator and voltmeter. The current value is read on the chosen scale. Resistance is deduced from the voltage measured at the terminals according to Ohm's law.
Ohmmeters are temperature-compensated. Their four-terminal measuring technique compensates for the voltage drop provoked by the measuring current in the test wires and at the contacts.
Micro-ohmmeters use four terminals to measure the conductivity of machinery windings or transformers, and to control the continuity of electrical and ground wires. Portable multimeters are often referred to as ohmmeters. Digital panel ohmmeters can be integrated into automatic measurement systems.
Insulation testers (megohmmeters) are ohmmeters designed to measure the dielectric strength and the electrical isolation between two motor or transformer conductors. Ground current meters measure the resistance in ground wires.
