A Raman spectrometer is an non-destructive material analysis device using a laser light source. The Raman effect describes a material's characteristic scattering of photons when light passes through it.

Applications

These devices are used in field or laboratory analysis, in geology, the petroleum industry, agribusiness, for glue and mud analysis, and for testing pharmaceutical products.

Technologies

Such spectrometers can characterize solid, liquid or gaseous materials, providing data on a sample's chemical composition and structure. A laser provides monochromatic light in the UV, visible or near infrared range. The scattered light is read by a multi-channel CCD sensor or a single-channel InGaAs sensor (frequent in the case of infrared).

Some multi-monochromator devices offer better spectral resolution and Rayleigh ray rejection ratios. With infrared, acquisition time is longer, but penetration is higher. Spatial resolution is better with ultraviolet. Spectral resolution depends on the monochromator's focal length, the number of lines in the dispersive network and on temperature.

The sample can be placed in a cell or moved via a motorized stage for surface, depth or volumetric cartography.

How to choose

Laser characteristics, the detectable range of Raman wavelengths and the resolution are the main elements to consider.
