The lower-pressure chamber is first evacuated, followed by the evacuation of the entire cell. Gas is then introduced into the evacuated higher-pressure chamber, creating a constant pressure difference between the two chambers. The gas permeates through the specimen from the higher-pressure side to the lower-pressure side.
