Description

The OSU Rate of Heat Release Apparatus is used to determine the heat release rate of the aircraft cabin material in accordance with 14 CFR 25.853(d), FAA Fire Test Handbook Chapter 5. Summary of OSU Rate of Heat Release Test The sample is mounted vertically and pushed into the test chamber. A constant airflow at a constant temperature is supplied into the test chamber, while a 3.5w/cm2 heat radiant and a pilot flame are applied to the exposed surface of the sample. The rate of heat release from the burning sample is calculated by measuring the temperature before and after passing through the test chamber. The OSU test applies to materials in the following locations on the aircraft: • Ceiling and Wall Panels • Partitions • Galley Structures • Large Cabinet Walls • Storage Compartments OSU Rate of Heat Release Apparatus consists of • Stainless steel made and 25mm insulated test chamber, with side observation window and gasket door. • Four silicon carbide heating elements, type LL 508mm by 16mm. • The heating element is controlled by two PID temperature controllers to provide a consistent heating radiant. • The air distribution system offers 21-24 degrees consistent airflow. • Airflow at 0.04 cube meters per second. • Chiller and heat transfer device for air cooling system. • High-pressure blower to provide airflow. • Thermopiles for heat release rate measurement, five hot thermocouple junctions in the stack, and five cold junctions in the air chamber. • Two water-cooled heat flux meters to measure the heat flux density at the center and corner. • Methane gas mass flow controller for automated system calibration.
