Yb:KYW crystal similar to Yb:KGW is a laser active material used to generate ultrashort pulses in range of few hundred femtoseconds. In Yb:KYW crystal lattice yttrium is replaced by ytterbium, and as both chemical elements are very similar in size, ytterbium could replace yttrium up to 100% without significant lattice deformation. Large absorption cross section at around 981 nm makes the crystal well suited for diode pumping. Efficient absorption and low quantum defect let’s to build compact lasers for high power applications.
