Ytterbium doped yttrium lithium fluoride (Yb:YLF) crystal is used in production of short and ultrashort pulse lasers. Due to the similar size, yttrium ions can be replaced with ytterbium rare earth ions without strongly affecting the lattice structure. Negative thermo-optic coefficients of the Yb:YLF crystal leads to defocusing thermal lens which could be partly compensated by the focusing effect caused by the thermal expansion. Wide absorption bandwidth centered at 960 nm makes it well suited to be pumped with laser diodes. Combining it with thermo-optical properties of the Yb:YLF crystal it allows to produce lasers with a better beam quality than from the other Yb-doped laser crystals.
