Product overviewHorizontal directional drilling (HDD) generates large volumes of drilling fluid waste (mud/sludge) in pipeline, infrastructure and energy projects. Liquid slurries are difficult and costly to handle and transport. SLUSORB™ provides a low-dosage solidification solution specifically formulated for HDD mud management, reducing transport frequency and facilitating safe disposal.
What is SLUSORB™?SLUSORB™ is a super absorbent polymer (SAP) engineered to absorb and retain hundreds of times its own weight in water and aqueous drilling fluids. Its cross-linked network immobilizes free water, preventing leakage and gushing. Formulations handle bentonite-based mud, water-based mud and mixed slurries. Typical application rates are very low (0.5%–1.5% by sludge weight) with minimal volume expansion (~1%).
Key advantages- Low dosage, high efficiency: 0.5%–1.5% (w/w) typically solidifies liquid sludge within minutes after mechanical mixing.
- Cost savings: Reduces vacuum-truck runs and transport volume, lowering labour, transport and tipping costs.
- Environmentally compliant: Formulations designed to pass EPA 9095B (Paint Filter Test); non-leachable after solidification.
- No specialized separation equipment: On-site mixing with standard machinery (e.g., excavator) — no centrifuges or filter presses required.
- Long-term stability: Stable in landfill environments; not readily biodegraded, locking absorbed liquids.
- Flexible formulations: Available granular, fibrous or particulate for saline/high-conductivity conditions.
The challenges- Using vacuum trucks and centralised treatment is costly (hourly truck fees and transport charges).
- Traditional absorbents (sawdust, cement, lime) require high dosing (20%–100%) and increase transport volume and cost.
- Natural drying requires large site areas, slows operations and risks leakage or groundwater contamination.
- Certain solidifiers can backflow under pressure, breaching environmental rules; additional transport and treatment add carbon footprint and safety risks.
Applications and application method in HDD projectsSLUSORB™ is used for on-site solidification of waste mud collected in pits or roll-off containers when centralized treatment is impractical. It also treats slurry mixtures containing cuttings.
- 1. Waste collection: After pipe pullback, transfer waste mud from the vibrating screen or mud tank to roll-off containers or a designated solidification area.
- 2. Polymer addition: Spread polymer powder onto the mud surface at the recommended low dosage (typically 0.5%–1.5% of sludge weight).
- 3. Rapid mixing: Use an excavator bucket or similar to mix; solidification generally completes within 15–30 minutes depending on formulation and conditions.
- 4. Final disposal: Once solidified and passing EPA 9095B, the material becomes stackable and can be transported to landfill without extended drying.
FAQs (selected)- Will SLUSORB™ re‑leach water? — Properly formulated SLUSORB™ locks water into a non‑leachable colloid stable in landfill conditions.
- What dosage is required? — Typical dosage 0.5%–1.5% by weight; exact rate depends on slurry conductivity and free-water content.
- How fast does it act? — After mechanical mixing, solidification usually occurs within minutes (often 15–30 minutes).
- Is special equipment required? — No; standard site machinery (excavator) is sufficient. No centrifuges or filter presses needed.
- How is the solidified waste disposed? — If regulatory criteria are met, cured material can be landfilled as a solid without free water.
- Is SLUSORB™ environmentally harmful? — Most SLUSORB™ formulations are chemically stable and non-toxic; overall environmental impact is reduced due to fewer spills and transport trips.
