Description

Overview
MEPS (Micro Extraction by Packed Sorbent) miniaturizes conventional SPE packed-bed devices from millilitre to microlitre bed volumes. MEPS supports reversed-phase, normal-phase, mixed-mode and ion-exchange chemistries and is available in common SPE phases.

MEPS Barrel Insert and Needle
The Barrel Insert and Needle (BIN) contains the stationary phase and is integrated into the syringe needle, enabling direct extraction within the syringe assembly.

Sample size and sensitivity
Minimum sample volumes can be 10 µL. Larger sample volumes can be concentrated by taking multiple aliquots (for example 100 µL or 250 µL aliquots to accumulate ≥1 mL).

Automation
MEPS can be automated (AOC-MEPS) for on-line extraction and injection with a single device, reducing processing time and operator interventions in routine workflows.

Sorbent life
BIN lifetime depends on sample matrix. Example: C18 analysis of whole plasma typically allows ~25–100 samples before BIN replacement; cleaner matrices give significantly longer life.

Carryover
The small quantity of phase in the BIN is easily washed between samples to minimise carryover; automation permits washing during previous-sample runtime.

Flexible and easy to use
The sorbent bed dimensions deliver performance comparable to conventional SPE for similar sample types. The AOC-MEPS workflow integrates sample preparation and analysis on a single platform.

AOC-MEPS system — injection volumes
Typical automated injections are 50–200 µL of elution solvent into the analytical instrument. Use a large-volume injection technique that removes solvent while condensing target analytes.
