Angle heads are used on machining centers for angled drilling, milling and tapping that ordinary tool holders cannot handle. They should not be confused with rotary/live tool holders which are used on lathes.
These devices are used to machine all types of materials, including wood, stone, metal and plastics. They optimize manufacturing efficiency and reduce downtime for parts that require multiple tooling operations.
Such components may have either fixed or adjustable angles. They resemble right-angle gears and include an input drive shank designed to fit the spindle of a specific machine.
Application specifics will determine the choice of a fixed or adjustable head. Other factors are the machine's spindle type (BT, CAT®, HSK, ISO, etc.), rotational speed and coolant options.
