Invented decades ago but still in use today, the original Hirth coupling from Voith Turbo meets the combined requirements of modern engineering:
- Lightweight design
- High strength connections
We offer a complete range of services to meet almost any requirement:
- Standard rings
- Toothed rings to customer specifications
- Serrations on customer components
With these self-centring, radial face tooth connection, you can precisely connect shafts, discs, wheels and cranks.
Needless to say, we will also support you in the design process and with the calculations for the Hirth serration / coupling. We have access to effective simulation tools for performing the calculations.
Applications for Hirth couplings:
- Machine tools (particularly rotary indexing tables, turret heads and pallet changers)
- Turbo compressors
- Metrology
- Robotics
- Nuclear technology
- Medical technology
- General engineering
- Wind power plants
- Marine propulsion (propellers, shaft drive chains)
- Engines (crankshafts)
- Gas turbines
- Aviation (propellers, turbine blade fixings)
- Plastic machines
- Rail transmissions
- Large scale gearboxes
- Rolling stands / rolling mills
- Universal joint shafts
- Safety couplings
Standard sizes are available as small as 50 mm in diameter and as large as 1500 mm in diameter. 3 piece Hirth gears are available as well as custom designed gears.
Milling of Teeth
The gears are rough machined, thermally annealed, semi-finished machined with a roughing of the Hirth Teeth and finally thermally stressed relieved.
Grinding of the Teeth
The diameters and faces are rough ground with the teeth being induction hardened to a RC58 +2 surface hardness using Danobat CNC grinders.
Grinding of the Surface
The gears are precision ground again on their faces, both inside and outside diameters using ELB and Voumard grinders.
Final Grinding & Inspection
The Hirth teeth are semi-finished ground, unclamped and then reclamped for a final ground holding extreme accuracies on new Magerle CNC grinder.
Matching Hirth type face gears are ground parallel to .002mm (.00008") or better using ELB grinders and inspected on Rank Taylor Hobson and Sip Mul 300 measurement machines.
