Different object colours and surfaces can heavily effect the detection behaviour of an energetic switch. With purely energetic evaluation, it is, for example, not possible to detect a black object in front of a white background. The white background reflects more light than the object itself.
In order to deal with such applications reliably, the background suppression procedure was developed. In this procedure, both the light reflected by the background and by the object is evaluated. The light is captured by two different receiver elements. With this procedure, it is possible to reliably detect e.g. a dark object on a light color conveyor belt.
There are two different procedures for the physical realisation of background suppression. In general, a distinction is made between a fixed and adjustable background suppression. With a fixed background suppression, the transmitter and receiver elements are rigidly mounted.
The laser units are particularly suitable for the detection of very small objects. With larger objects, a red-light or infrared sensor should be used. Only the background suppression procedure enables the detection of a dark object on a light conveyor belt.

In various detecting devices with Bestact incorporated. and to mainlain high operation accuracy for a long period of time, sufficient investigation and consideration has been applied to the maierial sélection and design of the contact energizing magnet.
Permanent magnets used for Yaskawa's detecting devices are rare earth magnet and anisotropic ferrite magnet which are characterized by high coercive force and large energy product, thus optimum design has been achieved. Featuring excellent stable performance without demagneti-zation due to fluctuation in temperature.
Demagnetization due to aging is 2% or less tor a 10 year period.
Those magnet proximity sensors are typically used in : steel plant machinery and equipment (for raw material handling, iron making, rolling milIs), plating line, large-size material handling ma-chines, automobile manufacturing lines, elevators, cement and related equipment, power station facilities, dam equipment. pollution prevention equipment and devices. mine machinery, Chem-ical industry machinery and equipment. marine product processing machines.

In all automated processes the use of sensors to provide information for the plc is of prime importance. Sensors supply the necessary signals on positions, end stops, levels or serve as pulse transmitters for counting jobs or for monitoring rotational speed. In industrial usage inductive and capacitive proximity switches are indispensable. As compared to mechanical switches they offer almost ideal conditions: non-contact, maintenance-free operation, high switching frequencies and switching accuracies as well as high protection against vibration, dust and humidity. Inductive sensors detect all metals without contact, capacitive sensors detect nearly all solid and liquid media such as metal, glass, wood, plastic, water, oil, etc..

The PXS or PSS type products are sensors designed to control the opening of protective devices, machine casings and access doors.
Associated with their respective coded magnet and a controller module, they are capable of monitoring 1 or more "O" contacts
(break, closed with a magnet) and/or 1 or more "C" contacts (make, closed with a magnet). They meet the "CE" directives and
European regulations relating to machine conformity as per the standards EN60204 - EN1088 - En 954 and be covered by the
categories 1 to 4 of these standards according to the associated module (CETIM certificate).
Safety functions performed thanks to :
- Tamper-proof: the sensor, associated with its coded magnet, reduces the possibility of tampering ; a standard magnet cannot
actuate the sensor .
- Redundancy: the components are redundant. If part of the sensor fails, the redundant circuit continues to operate.
- Unbalance: associated with a controller module which checks the unbalance of the signals from the sensor, the first fault is
signaled if the switches are not actuated in the right order
Magnetic safety sensors represent an alternative to mechanical position switches in the following cases :
- Mechanical clearance required to overcome alignment or vibration problems,
- Compulsory complete sealing: industrial, food and mechanical environments,
- Longer lifetime and reliability.

PSEN sensor technology, Safety for man and machine
Safety switches ... for safety gate and position monitoring :
Hazardous machine movements must be stopped when a guard is opened. It must not be possible to either defeat or manipulate these guards. PSEN safety switches meet this requirement and are therefore suitable for monitoring gates in safety fences for safety zones, for example.
Safety bolt ... for safety gates in a rugged everyday industrial environment :
For safety gates that are difficult to adjust or in areas where safety gates are often opened and closed, protection must be provided against defeat and manipulation, but a long material service life must also be guaranteed. PSENbolt provides a complete solution, comprising safety switch, handle and bolt.
Safe camera systems : to monitor two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) zones.

BNS range magnetic safety sensors serve to monitor the position of sliding, hinged and removable safety guards. Sensors without integral evaluation can only be used for safety duties to DIN VDE 0660-209 in combination with a safety guard monitor of the AES / AZR range for protection up to Control Category 4 to EN 954-1, see chapter 10.2.
The use of magnetic safety sensors is of particular advantage in cases where extremely dirty conditions can occur or high hygienic standards need to be maintained. This is provided by the simplicity of cleaning the units.
A further advantage is the facility for concealed mounting under non-magnetic materials. Working surfaces and storage areas can be arranged without the need for dust-collecting edges or other functionally required cut-outs or projections.
BNS range magnetic safety sensors can also be used in cases where a precise approach is not possible and greater tolerances are required.
Schmersal make both standard and AS-i Safety at Work magnetic safety sensors.

The RPS-400-30 has a 22mm barrel housing, completely self -contained, 12-30VDC powered ultrasonic proximity sensor. A sealed transducer provides protection in environments where dirt and moisture are a problem. The sensor is constructed of Delrin plastic with a silicone rubber sensing face. This sensor is range or distance sensitive, enabling the sensor to detect objects within the desired range, and reject objects outside the desired range.
The RPS-400-30 is a solid state sensor and has an NPN open collector transistor output. For initial setup purposes, a built in LED indicator illuminates when the ultrasonic waveform is reflected back to the unit within the preset range.
The sensing range is fixed at less than 5in. by connecting the green lead to the black lead of the cable; or adjustable up to 30in. by connecting a resistor/potentiometer between the green and black leads. The resistor chart on our catalog sheet PDF provides resistor values and approximate resulting sensing ranges.
The ultrasonic sensor can be used as a proximity sensor or level sensor. It is equally effective on liquid, metal, plastic and glass targets regardless of color, density, or transparency. Standard 6ft. cable is provided. Optional cable lines are available.

The RPS-322 (model shown) has 2 sealed stainless steel multiplexed transducers, independent range control adjustments, LED indicators, and form C relay outputs.
The transducer head is constructed of 303 grade stainless steel with a 302 grade stainless steel sensing face, and is best suited for environments where dirt and moisture are a problem, as well as some chemical environments. This sensor also has a unique master and slave feature which enables many of the same units to be used within close proximity of one another without cross-talk interference. For example, if three sensors are needed in a close area, one sensor would be left as a master and the other two would be slaves.
The remote transducers allow for mounting of the sensor heads in cramped spaces while the controller is out of the way. The (2) independent and isolated form C relays furnish N.O. and N.C. outputs. This sensor operates at a frequency of 150kHz for the 72" range. This sensor has a narrow sensing beam. Mounting flanges, LED indicators, ranging potentiometers, and 6-ft. transducer cables are included. Optional cable lengths are available.

- Sensing distance of 2 mm (0.078” to 15 mm (0.591”)
Capacitive proximity sensors are ideal for sensing non-metal objects or for level control of fluids and granular material.
Adjustment can be used to zero out the presence of an object allowing the sensor to sense "through" a bulk material or liquid level.
The operating distance of a capacitive sensor is related to the dielectric constant (εr) of the object material to be detected. The higher the value of εr, the easier the detection of the object will be. The object to be detected through must have a lower εr value.
The threshold level is adjustable via a 20-turn potentiometer located at the rear of the sensor

Level and feed monitoring - that is one of the attributes of capacitive sensors. Irrespective of whether it involves a solid material such as paper or wood, granules or liquids. They reliably detect the status of the product in the production process and during final inspection.
Capacitive sensors supplied by SICK are always convenient to use. Sensing ranges between 1 and 25 mm allow clearance in almost any installation situation and they are extremely adaptable for a wide range of applications.
Thereby these sensors are suitable for extremely adverse industrial environments. Impurities and contamination, dust and airborne spray particles have little effect upon them as does electro-magnetic interference. No wonder that they are installed in the most diverse branches of industry. In the food industry, car industry or in storage and conveying technology.
