Position sensors determine an object's position, which may be its location or its orientation. They also can monitor a location so as to detect the presence or absence of an object.
ApplicationsThese devices are used in automated and robotic systems, in machine tools and in conveyor systems.
TechnologiesMechanical position sensors are often detectors. They are similar to switches in that the object or part presses against a lever that closes a dry contact. Non-contact proximity detectors use induction systems for metallic objects, and Hall-effect or reed systems for metallic objects. Capacitive or photoelectric systems can be used with any type of object.
Resistive mechanical sensors indicate distance or angular position, and feature a rotary or insertion shaft linked to a potentiometer. Encoders have the same function as resistive mechanical sensors, but use optical systems sensitive to reflective strips set in a disc or a track.
Inductive sensors provide a signal proportional to the distance to the object. Range is under one centimeter. Laser sensors (triangulation of the object's position) and ultrasound sensors (sonar effect) are used for greater distances.
Single- or double-axis inclinometers use tilt or MEMS systems to measure inclination.
Consider the unit's range, data precision, available outlets, current loop or network interface.
