A switch links one or more inputs to one or more outputs. An analog switch connects signal and electric control wires. The on-off switch is the simplest type. A network switch controls data communication between an emitting device and a single machine.
Electromechanical switches are selectors. They serve as single- or multi-pole on-off switches or as single- or three-phase reversing switches. They can control speed in a star- or triangle-wound Dahlander motor. An Ethernet switch ensures the exchange of data between the machines to which it is connected. Other switches control USB connections and all types of switched networks.
Low-current switches include toggle, button, slide and rotary types. Sturdy, high-current industrial switches are spring-loaded for a sure, rapid transition. A network switch directs data to a unique target machine, rather than to all the networked machines, as would a hub. This saves bandwidth.
Choice of analog switch will depend on pole arrangement and current capacity. Network switches are selected on the basis of the number and types of available ports.
