The temperature is indicated by a needle on a dial protected by a housing. Results are displayed in Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F) or both.
Such devices are used at the measurement point. Unlike digital thermometers, they do not require a source of electric power. Stainless steel models are used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, as well as in agribusiness.
TechnologiesDial thermometers employ either a bimetal or gas expansion mechanism. The first takes advantage of the different linear expansion and contraction rates of two strips of dissimilar metals laminated together. One end of this assembly is attached to the needle. As the temperature changes, the strip bends, causing the needle to move.
How to chooseChoice will depend on specific intended use. Factors include the substance and range of temperatures to be measured and the measurement environment.
