microcontroller

A micro-controller is an integrated processor with a memory program which runs as soon as it is energized. It is less powerful than a microprocessor, but its internal and peripheral functions are specialized for particular applications.

Applications

These devices are frequently used in embedded systems because they are structured and conceived for specific applications. This results in lower development and production costs.

Technologies

Such controllers combine a processor, RAM and EPROM, EEPROM or Flash memory for program storage on a single chip. Certain models include CAN or CNA converters, PWM signal generators, UART, I²C, SPI, CAN, USB, Ethernet and other communications bus controllers. Development tasks usually involve use of a unit with rewritable memory.

Programming is via a development kit furnished by the manufacturer. One-time-programmable (OTP) micro-controllers are preferred for short production runs. Mask ROM development costs are easily amortized in large-scale production.

How to choose

Choice will depend on the particular functions to be carried out and the specific ports and I/Os required. Internal memory must be large enough for the program.
