Description
Consistent surface quality during production and processing of coated or treated materials (e.g. paper, plastics, metal or wood surfaces) is critical. Variations in gloss can arise from manufacturing defects, supplier changes or material fluctuations and often lead to quality control non-conformities or rejections. The PICOGLOSS 503 provides an objective, reliable gloss assessment.

Design and function
The PICOGLOSS 503 is a compact, portable 3-angle gloss meter with measurement geometries 20°, 60° and 85° for standards-compliant measurements according to DIN, ISO, ASTM, BS and JIS in high-gloss, mid-gloss and matt-gloss ranges. Operation via scroll wheel and color display; measurement triggered by a side-mounted measurement button. Automatic switch to specular gloss measurement for highly reflective surfaces. Integrated USB (Mini) for data export and optional power from PC. Device locks into a readiness holder that contains the calibration standard "A".

High-contrast LCD shows measurement and calibration values as well as mode, messages and prompts.

Calibration and self-test
Only one calibration standard is required. Calibration routine runs automatically at key press; the calibration value is stored in the device. On power-up a self-test of approx. 2 seconds runs, assessing also the condition of the calibration standard and displaying cleaning recommendations if necessary.

Statistics
In statistic mode several (2 - 99) measurements per sample can be taken and statistically evaluated. Results can be saved and compared with a reference. Display selectable in three columns:

• current value, mean, min/max value
• range, standard deviation, difference
• Pass / Fail (within/outside tolerance vs. reference)
