DescriptionConsistent surface appearance is critical in the production and processing of surface-treated materials (e.g. paper, plastics, metal or wood surfaces). Variations in gloss can result from production faults, supplier changes and material variability and often lead to claims or rejection. Objective gloss assessment becomes increasingly important with higher customer requirements.
Design and functionThe PICOGLOSS 560 MC-XS is one of the smallest portable gloss meters and is particularly suited for gloss measurement on small parts thanks to a very small, round measurement aperture (3 mm Ø). The small aperture increases sensitivity and makes the instrument more sensitive to influences such as flatness, radii, texture or slight mottling. For good repeatability the measured surface should appear absolutely flat and uniform; even minor shifts of the instrument can produce measurable changes. For small-part measurements a sufficient number of readings is recommended and the average can be taken as the part gloss. For larger surfaces devices with a larger aperture remain more suitable and convenient.
OperationMeasurement is performed with one-button operation; the measured value remains displayed for about 30 s. Automatic shutdown saves battery; the last measured value is retained and shown again when switched on.
DisplayHigh-contrast LCD shows measurement and calibration values as well as messages and prompts.
CalibrationTwo-point calibration requires only one calibration standard. The calibration routine runs automatically at key press. The calibration value is stored in the standard EPROM.
60° gloss measurementSpecifically for paints and plastics: ranges 0 to approx. 15 GU (display with two decimal places) and 0 to 150 GU (display with one decimal place).
Specular gloss measurementOn metallic surfaces specular gloss measurements up to 1000 GU are possible; range switching occurs automatically at 150 GU.
Dual automatic display resolution switching- from 0.00 GU to 15.00 GU → to 15.0 GU to 150.0 GU
- from 15.0 GU to 150.0 GU → to 150 GU to 1000 GU
USB interfaceMeasurement data can be transferred to a PC via the supplied USB cable and further processed with the PICOSOFT IV software (use only the supplied USB cable).

Power supplyThe PICOGLOSS 560 MC-XS is powered by one micro cell (LR03). When connected to a PC via USB, the PC USB interface supplies power.
