Description

Description
The Cathodic Delaminator Model 602 is an instrument for rapid quality checks and routine quality control of coated metals. The system comprises a power/control unit and an immersion temperature-controlled vessel with 8 test receptacles and a circulator. Each test receptacle has an independent constant-current source, enabling up to 8 specimens to be tested simultaneously and independently. The cathodic delamination test reveals coating infiltration at damaged areas and highlights faulty pretreatments (bubble formation at pinholes, scratches or stone chipping).

Purpose and Application
Mechanical damage to organic coatings on metal causes loss of corrosion protection. Typical causes include stone impact on vehicles, handling, transport and installation damage. Corrosion behaviour depends on the protection system, notably substrate surface preparation and coating composition.

Test principle
The instrument examines adhesion of coatings on metal. A scratch tool (e.g. van Laar scratching tool, Model 426) is used to create a defined approx. 5 cm long scratch through the coating to the metallic substrate. The specimen is placed in a test receptacle filled with electrolyte (0.5 N KOH) and clamped with an alligator clip. The test is started via a timer (standard test duration: 30 min). Under these accelerated conditions, coating infiltration can be observed. After testing, samples are rinsed and dried; undercut areas can be removed mechanically for evaluation.
