Description

Product Overview
The WL1253 linear latching solenoid is a bi-stable electromechanical actuator that retains the plunger position (extended/retracted) without continuous power by using a permanent magnet for mechanical latching. A short polarity pulse switches the plunger between two stable states, making the device suitable for battery-powered and low-standby-energy systems.

Key Functional Description
The WL1253 comprises a coil, a permanent magnet, a plunger and a housing. A brief DC pulse of appropriate polarity reverses or reinforces the magnetic field to move the plunger; the permanent magnet then holds the new state without further power. Typical stroke: 6 mm (customizable). Operating voltages commonly range from 3 V to 36 V depending on model.

Working Principle
The device combines an electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The permanent magnet provides the holding force in either extended or retracted position when no power is applied. Applying a correctly polarized DC pulse creates a transient field that either cancels or reinforces the permanent magnet field, causing the plunger to move to the alternate stable position. After the pulse, the plunger remains latched by the permanent magnet until the next pulse of opposite polarity.

Main Characteristics
  • Bi-stable (two stable positions) with zero power consumption while latched.
  • Reduced heat generation due to pulse operation; suitable for intermittent actuation.
  • High holding force relative to size thanks to internal permanent magnets.
  • Fast response and compact design; options for magnetic shielding.
  • Typical pulse operation: short DC pulses (example ranges: 20–100 ms); recommended voltage up to DC 36 V for WL1253.

How to avoid common design mistakes
  • Constant power mode: avoid continuous drive. Limit pulse duration (typically 20–100 ms) to prevent coil overheating.
  • Incorrect polarity: use an H-bridge or bidirectional driver; single-direction transistor drivers cannot reverse polarity.
  • Back EMF: include flyback diodes or Zener clamps to absorb voltage spikes when the pulse ends.
  • Over-load condition: do not exceed maximum holding force; fit mechanical stops to protect the solenoid.
  • Weak power source: ensure supply can deliver pulse inrush current (up to 1–2 A at 12 V typical).
  • Ferromagnetic interference: avoid nearby steel/iron that diverts flux; use non-ferrous mounting hardware where feasible.
  • Demagnetization risks: prevent excessive temperature or incorrect repeated pulses that can weaken permanent magnets.

Advantages & Disadvantages
  • Advantages: Zero standby power when latched; minimal heat during hold state; mechanical memory (position retained if power is lost); compact and suitable for battery-powered applications.
  • Disadvantages: Requires bidirectional drive (H-bridge); typically lower pull force than continuously powered solenoids; not ideal for very high-frequency switching; sensitive to strong external magnetic fields; holding force fixed by magnet strength.

Troubleshooting highlights
  • Does not latch (moves but does not stay): pulse width too short or magnet degraded. Increase pulse to 50–100 ms; check magnet condition.
  • Does not move: coil open/short, mechanical binding, or driver failure. Measure coil resistance; inspect plunger bore; verify driver output.
  • Intermittent latching: incorrect polarity, insufficient pulse current, or jamming. Verify polarity and stabilize supply (use low-ESR capacitor near coil).
  • Latches but unlocks under load: external load exceeds holding force or ferromagnetic interference. Use a stronger solenoid or non-ferrous mounting hardware.
  • Overheating during pulsing: check pulse timing in firmware or MCU; add hardware watchdog or limit to prevent prolonged conduction.

Applications
Typical uses include smart locks, shutoff valves for meters, portable medical devices (valves/controllers), EV locking mechanisms, vending machines, access control systems, IoT actuators and other low-power automation requiring a retained state without power.
