Description

Overview
The WL0837 bistable latching solenoid is an electromechanical actuator designed for low-average-power retention applications. It uses a permanent magnet to hold the plunger in one of two stable positions after a short polarity-dependent pulse, eliminating the need for continuous holding current. The compact design suits space-constrained, battery-powered or safety-critical systems in industrial, automotive and security sectors.

Product overview (compact bistable latching solenoid)
Compact industrial design available in push/pull and rotary variants, with steel or stainless-steel housings and high-conductivity copper coils. Operates from low-voltage DC supplies (typical range 3.6V–24V). Magnetic latching provides zero holding power consumption. Multiple sizes, strokes and mounting options allow integration into automation, fluid control, locking and vehicle systems.

How it works
The device combines an electromagnetic coil and a permanent magnet. A short electrical pulse (polarity-dependent) applied to the coil either aids or opposes the permanent magnet flux, causing the plunger to move to the alternate stable position. After the pulse ends the permanent magnet retains the plunger without power. Reversing pulse polarity returns the plunger to the previous state. Switching relies on millisecond-range pulses, enabling very low average power and minimal heat generation.

Features
  • Energy-efficient: power consumed only during switching pulses; zero holding power.
  • Bistable retention: two stable states held by a permanent magnet.
  • Low heat generation due to brief active pulses.
  • Fail-safe behaviour: retains last commanded state on power loss.
  • Compact footprint: smaller coil and assembly size compared with continuous-duty solenoids.

Difference: single-latching vs double-latching
Single-latching retains position at one end after the pulse and requires a reverse pulse to return. Double-latching (true bistable) locks reliably at both stroke ends without power. Select the type according to whether the application must hold one or both positions passively.

Applications
  • Fluid control: irrigation, HVAC and sanitation valves — pulse to open/close, no holding current required.
  • Security & access control: smart locks and cabinet/server-rack locks retaining state without continuous power.
  • Aerospace & automotive: low-power actuators for latches, isolation switches and battery management systems.
  • Industrial automation: sorting gates, safety interlocks, latching relays and position-retaining mechanisms.
  • Battery-operated IoT and remote devices where minimal energy consumption is essential.

Advantages & Disadvantages
  • Advantages: very low average power consumption, minimal heat, high reliability and retained state on power loss.
  • Disadvantages: higher unit cost than simple continuous solenoids; requires a bipolar pulse driver; sensitivity to demagnetization at very high temperatures or strong external fields; typically shorter stroke than some continuous-duty designs.

Troubleshooting (common issues & remedies)
  • Problem: does not switch — Cause: insufficient pulse amplitude/duration. Remedy: verify driver pulse voltage/current and wiring; reduce voltage drop and check pulse timing.
  • Problem: switches but does not hold — Cause: magnet weakened or overheated. Remedy: check operating temperature and magnetic exposure; replace degraded unit.
  • Problem: intermittent operation — Cause: loose connections or unstable power. Remedy: inspect connectors, continuity and power stability; ensure correct pulse shape.
  • Problem: unknown state at power-up — Cause: previous state unknown. Remedy: implement startup routine to command a defined safe state.

Design tips & selection guidance
Specify driver capability for required pulse voltage, current and duration. If a defined fail-safe state is required on power loss, provide dedicated circuitry (e.g. capacitor discharge or auxiliary actuator). Account for demagnetization risk by selecting appropriate temperature rating and shielding. Choose a model with holding force ≥2× expected mechanical load. Define required thrust/pull, stroke, supply voltage and environmental constraints (temperature, humidity, corrosion resistance). Consider single- vs double-latching based on interference and wear trade-offs.
