Description

Overview
DC Holding Electromagnet is an electromagnetic device used to hold ferromagnetic items with a powerful grip powered by DC voltage. It consists of a copper coil surrounding an iron core enclosed in a steel housing. When connected to a DC source, it attracts and holds a steel plate firmly. These electromagnets are used in industrial automation, machine safety, robotics, magnetic doors, packaging machines, lifting devices, and positioning equipment.

Product Overview
DC Holding Electromagnets are available in round, square, flat, and customized designs with holding forces ranging from a few newtons to several thousand newtons. Typical nominal operating voltages include 6V, 12V, 24V, and 48V DC. Optional features: waterproof design, temperature resistant coils, anti-corrosion coating, cable assemblies, connectors, and custom mounting holes. Units are designed for continuous or intermittent duty depending on application. OEM customization available for dimensions, magnetic force, coil resistance, insulation class, and operating temperature.

How it Operates
Electric current flows through the copper winding once DC voltage is applied.
The magnetic field magnetizes the iron core and the housing channels magnetic flux to the contact surface.
The magnetic circuit is closed by the steel workpiece, producing a powerful attracting force that holds the item. When disconnected, current stops, the magnetic field collapses and the workpiece is released. Some models include demagnetization circuits or low-residual-magnetism designs to provide faster release and avoid residual magnetism.

Main Features
  • High magnetic gripping force with low power consumption relative to holding performance.
  • Compact size and easy mounting for integration into automated systems.
  • Quick switching on/off, quiet operation, and high repeatability.
  • Available in multiple voltages (6V, 12V, 24V, 48V) and holding capacities.
  • Waterproof and corrosion-resistant surface treatment options for harsh environments.
  • Low maintenance and long-term reliable operation.

Applications
  • Factory automation: positioning of workpieces for assembly, welding, machining and inspection.
  • Robotic end effectors for picking and placing steel parts.
  • Packaging machines for temporary positioning and material transfer.
  • Textile machines for fabric handling and positioning.
  • Medical devices: diagnostic and laboratory instruments requiring magnetic clamping.
  • Security systems: electromagnetic door locks, access control, fire doors.
  • Fixtures, CNC machines, semiconductor equipment, printing machines and automated warehouses.

Advantages & Disadvantages
  • Advantages: high holding force, fast switching, compact design, easy PLC integration, low maintenance, customizable holding force and voltages, suitable for industrial continuous or intermittent use.
  • Disadvantages: requires continuous electrical power to maintain hold (unless paired with backup), holding force reduced by air gaps, rust, paint or uneven surfaces; improper continuous-duty design can cause overheating and reduced coil life.

Troubleshooting
  • Weak holding force: verify power supply voltage, clean and flatten contact surfaces, check for air gaps or coil damage.
  • Overheat: check duty cycle, operating voltage, ambient temperature and ventilation; use continuous-duty models for prolonged operation.
  • No magnetic force: inspect wiring, connectors, fuse protection, coil continuity and power supply output.
  • Slow release: residual magnetism may be present; consider demagnetization circuits or low-residual designs.
  • Noise or vibration: inspect mounting hardware, mechanical alignment and contact surface condition.
  • Intermittent operation: check for loose terminals or broken cables and ensure correct voltage regulation and routine maintenance.

How to Choose
  • Determine required holding force including safety factor for dynamic loads.
  • Choose compatible working voltage (12V/24V etc.) to ensure stable performance and avoid overheating.
  • Select appropriate duty cycle (intermittent vs 100% continuous) and ensure thermal management for continuous use.
  • Ensure clean, flat ferromagnetic contact surfaces to achieve maximum holding force.
  • Consider environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, dust, corrosion) and choose waterproof or corrosion-resistant options if needed.
  • Confirm size and mounting style fit installation space.
  • For rapid release applications, select low-residual-magnetism designs or demagnetization circuits.
