Description

Description: Constant section retaining rings feature a uniform, constant section. The material used to make the ring is the same width at any point along the circumference of the ring. These cost less than tapered and spiral retaining rings and provide only three point contact with the groove. The constant section retaining ring (also called an earless retaining ring) has an equal cross section and no protruding ear like traditional stamped retaining rings. Constant section retaining rings and spiral retaining rings share similarities in production, processing and use: they are flattened and wound from steel wire and, after heat treatment and surface treatment, exhibit good elasticity and toughness. Earless retaining rings are produced for shaft applications and for bore/hole applications, with various tail-end forms available.

Advantages of constant section retaining rings
  • No assembly/disassembly lugs = space saving in radial direction
  • Edges with radius, no stamping burrs
  • Square edge wire for sharp-edged installations
  • No special tooling required for exotic materials
  • No special tooling for installation and removal necessary
  • Conform to DIN 471/472
  • Higher ring shear
  • Special ends available for specific applications
  • Heavy duty sections available for higher rotational capacities

What is a constant section snap ring? A constant section snap ring is a type of snap ring that has a constant cross section along its entire length. It is used in applications requiring high strength and stiffness and where the ring must withstand elevated stress and vibration.

Benefits of using a constant section snap ring
  • Increased reliability — less likely to slip out of position than some traditional snap rings
  • Increased safety — reduced risk if the ring comes loose
  • Increased precision — helps maintain precise alignment between parts

How to install a constant section snap ring Installation is commonly performed with a snap ring installation tool that fits over the ring and pushes it into the groove; verify the ring is fully seated and even with the surface. If no dedicated tool is available, alternative methods (used carefully) include using suitable screwdrivers or controlled chisel/hammer techniques to seat the ring into the groove. Ensure correct seating and evenness after installation.
