Description:The smooth edge elastic retaining ring (also called a retaining ring or snap ring) is a metal fastener that fits in a groove on a shaft or in a bore/housing to retain a component. Constant section retaining rings feature a uniform, constant section: the material used to make the ring has the same width at any point along the circumference. These rings generally cost less than tapered and spiral retaining rings and provide three-point contact with the groove.
The smooth elastic retaining rings are produced by a unique edge winding process. This process provides precise and flexible solutions for various circlip needs in different working conditions. Compared with traditional elastic retaining rings that require punches and molds (fixing part sizes), the edge winding process allows flexible modification of part diameter without changing tools, offering higher flexibility, greater practicability and wider coverage. Production by edge winding is more cost-effective than traditional retaining rings because only the required flat wire material is wound, minimizing material waste.
There are two structural types: rings for shafts (installed in a shaft groove for positioning and fixing shaft-end parts; capable of withstanding severe vibration and impact load but may require anti-loosening measures and installation positioning) and rings for holes (installed in a round hole to fix axial movement; outer diameter slightly larger than the assembly hole diameter). The smooth elastic retaining ring can vary in size from 1 mm to 1 m in diameter. Various combinations of shapes, styles, sizes and materials allow designs for many applications and industries, including automotive systems, wind turbines, fitness equipment, bearing fixtures, door handles, bicycles, office furniture and more.
Installation method of smooth elastic retaining ring:- Most are installed with spring retaining ring installation pliers
- Easy-to-install aids
- Automatic retaining ring installation machines
Advantages of constant section retaining rings- No assembly/disassembly lugs = space saving in radial direction
- Edges with radius, no stamping burrs
- Square edge wire for sharp-edged installations
- No special tooling for exotic materials
- No special tooling for installing and removal necessary
- Conform to DIN 471/472
- Higher ring shear
- Special ends for specific applications
- Heavy duty sections for higher rotational capacities
Classification and useFlat retaining ring: a separable substantially flat washer whose inner or outer portion serves as a radial cylindrical roller bearing outer or inner ring rib. Inclined retaining ring: a separable ring with an "L"-shaped section, the outer part of which acts as the inner retaining edge of a radial roller ball bearing. Middle retaining ring: a separable ring in two-or-more-row roller bearings used to separate and guide the rollers of each row. Ribs are narrow shoulders that protrude from the raceway surface parallel to the rolling direction and are used to support and guide the rolling elements and keep them in the bearing.
The main role of retaining rings is axial fixation (shoulder or collar fixation, shaft end retaining ring or conical surface fixation, shaft sleeve fixation, round nut fixation, elastic retaining ring fixation). In rolling bearings, the retaining ring acts as a movable retaining edge for retaining rollers and facilitating installation.
