Constant section retaining rings feature a uniform, constant section. This means the material used to make the ring is the same width at any point along the circumference of the ring. These rings cost less than tapered and spiral retaining rings and provide three-point contact with the groove.

Application characteristics of retaining ring
Compared with packing seals, mechanical retaining rings provide reliable sealing with typically no leakage or only a very small amount of leakage. The probability of leakage is approximately 1% compared with the packing sealing method. Retaining rings have a relatively long service life; when the working medium contains few or no particles, they can last 1 to 2 years or longer. During operation, attention should be paid to proper flushing of cooling or flushing lines; mechanical seals use friction pairs to achieve sealing, and liquid films can effectively lubricate, reducing friction. Power consumption for the sealing action typically reaches only 10%–15% of that of packing seals, resulting in less wear between the shaft and shaft sleeve. Retaining rings require higher manufacturing accuracy for critical faces and roughness. Material selection for friction pairs and other components should match the working medium to avoid premature failure.
