Description:
Constant section retaining snap rings feature a uniform, constant section (material has the same width at any point along the circumference). Round wire snap rings are split rings formed and cut from circular spring wire and are designed for use with round grooves in outer and inner shaft or bore applications. They typically hold tighter tolerances but have lower load-carrying capacity than square and rectangular snap rings. Round wire snap rings are axial mounting snap rings for shafts with semi-circular grooves, fitting more tightly in their grooves than traditional snap rings and providing a higher and more uniform thrust load capacity. They are manufactured from hardened circular-section carbon spring wire.

Applications and usage notes:
Constant cross-section retaining rings are oval when installed in a groove and make three points of contact only; they therefore withstand less force than tapered section rings and are an economical alternative depending on application. They provide more clearance than tapered rings but are more difficult to install/remove. Typical applications include automotive transmissions and other axial retention duties. Metric thrust rings are designed for axial mounting in machined grooves and can be used internally (in housings/bores) or externally (on shafts). Both inner and outer rings are available in a range of gap sizes and point types to suit most applications.
