Description

Description

Shaft constant section retaining rings feature a uniform, constant section: the material used to make the ring has the same width at any point along the circumference. They cost less than tapered and spiral retaining rings and provide three-point contact with the groove. Ring designs include helical, tapered, and constant section. Spiral rings do not have lugs or lugs that interfere within the assembly like standard stamp rings. Tapered section rings have compressible lugs that round them in the grooves, allowing them to grip tightly along the edges. Shaft constant section retaining rings are suited for heavy-duty applications. Special designs also exist for very shallow grooves and thin-walled parts of assemblies.

They help reduce costs by eliminating threading and other machining, and offer reduced weight and size. Shaft constant section retaining rings are installed on a grooved shaft and are used to limit axial movement of fixed parts. The inner diameter of this type of retaining ring is slightly smaller than the shaft diameter so that after expansion into the groove it secures axially. Conventional packaging is in batches with oil paper or plastic; surfaces are commonly phosphated (blackened).

Advantages of shaft constant section retaining ring
  • No assembly/disassembly lugs = space saving in radial direction
  • Edges with radius, no stamping burrs
  • Square edge wire available for sharp-edged installations
  • No special tooling required for exotic materials
  • No special tooling for installation and removal necessary
  • Conform to DIN 471/472
  • Higher ring shear
  • Special ends available for specific applications
  • Heavy duty sections available for higher rotational capacities

Key characteristics
  • Uniform section reduces stress concentration and distributes force evenly
  • Smooth inner and outer circles that do not interfere with mating parts
  • No burrs on inner and outer diameters; easy to assemble and disassemble
  • Minimal corner waste in production, saving material
  • No molds required; changing material thickness allows light, medium, and heavy load variants
  • Short production cycle; wide choice of materials (spring steel, stainless steel, copper, etc.)
  • Suitable for heavy-duty shaft applications

Installation and packaging notes

Installation is performed using circlip pliers: insert the pliers' tips into the pliers holes of the retaining ring, expand the ring, and place it onto the pre-machined shaft groove. Packaging is typically in batches using oil paper or plastic. Surface finish is often phosphating (blackened).

Applications

Used similarly to traditional C-type retaining rings. Common applications include hydraulic part assemblies, valves, instruments, lock core components, needle roller bearings, pulleys, connectors, quick connectors and various mechanical assemblies.

Materials

Earless (constant section) retaining rings can be produced from various materials including carbon spring steel, alloy spring steel (e.g. 65Mn), stainless steels (commonly 302 in the U.S., 304, 316), 17-7PH, beryllium bronze, and superalloys depending on application requirements.
