Really independent I/O modules with embedded microprocessor
Sigmadue is a system of standalone remote I/O modules designed by Ascon for fieldbus applications, in other words, fully distributed automation. No back planes nor common modules are necessary, also, wiring can be directly connected to the modules thus eliminating termination units. I/O modules have a lot of built-in intelligence. Embedded microprocessors allow them to scale data, linearise them, do signal conditioning, perform diagnostics and take care of alarms. These I/O modules can unburden the PLC memory. Valuable PLC memory can be dedicated only to the digital processing, thereby improving the PLC’s scan times. PLC processor can be downsized. The modules use CANbus or Modbus as bus, and are easily networked together. There are numerous CANbased or Modbus intelligent devices that can be networked together with the modules and brought into the system: PCs, PLCs, motor drives, valves, transmitters for pressures, temperatures. CANbus has the advantage in that the modules can be separated at great lengths from one another; so the I/O system can span large distances. Network adaptors will connect an entire Sigmadue system into Profibus or Ethernet. Ascon can also offer SigmaPAC, the programmable automation controller designed to be the host controller for the Sigmadue system of I/O and suitable to obtain completely open and configurable distributed automation systems.

The V470 is 6UVME module that provides sixteen independent, isolated analog outputs that may be user-programmed to operate as voltage outputs or thermocouple simulators. Users may write temperature or voltage values at VMEbus speed, and the uP will transparently do all necessary calculations and update the channel electronics.
In thermocouple simulation mode, theV470's lookup tables for all common thermocouple types allow users to write desired temperature directly to VME registers. Any channel can be associated with any of the reference junction sensors located in the external field-wiring termination panels, or can use the on-board sensor. Cold-junction compensation is via table lookup of thermocouple potential for the type currently selected. Reference junction temperatures are readable.
Two front-panel D-25 connectors interface to external analog devices. Each connector provides eight differential outputs and connections for two 4-wire RTDs. A D9 connector provides in-crate calibration check. Each isolated channel incorporates a software controlled DPDT relay that allows the channel output to be diverted to the test connector.
Up to four output channels may be series-connected to provide outputs up to ±50 volts.
An optional built-in-self-test (BIST) subsystem adds additional switching and an on- board ADC and firmware that allows the invocation of a full closed-loop test of all ranges of all 16 channels.
The V450 analog input module is also available.

The V450 is a VME 16-channel isolated analog-to-digital converter module which can acquire a wide range of DC voltages, including thermocouple temperatures. Each channel is independent with an isolated DC power supply, optoisolated interface, A/D converter, signal conditioning, input protection circuits, and test relay.
An internal microprocessor manages all data I/O and communicates with the VME bus via a transparent, VMEbus-speed dual-port memory.
Each channel may be user programmed to operate in voltage-input or thermocouple acquisition mode. In each mode, channel operating parameters, acquired measurements, and status flags are accessible in dedicated VME registers. Data rate/filtering options are provided. Data acquisition is managed autonomously by the processor, so VME masters may set channel parameters or read acquired measurements at any time at full VMEbus speed. Any channel can be associated with any of the reference junction sensors located in the external field-wiring termination panels, or can use the on-board sensor. Cold-junction compensation is via table lookup of thermocouple potential for the type currently selected. Reference junction temperatures are readable.
The V470 Analog Output Module is also available.
