Backlash free bellows flexible couplings are available with either a set screw or clamp fixing as standard from Ondrives Ltd of England.
There are two types available to purchase - choose from either a stainless or bronze bellows, hubs are either aluminium or stainless steel. They have a high torsional stiffness and response with complete absorption of eccentricity, angularity and end play by spring action of bellows configuration. Uniform rotational speed, even under misalignment, is acheivable with these couplings. They also have identical clockwise and anti-clockwise rotational characteristics as well as being maintenance free and oil and chemically resistant.
e-cad drawings are available from our website, www.ondrives.com to ensure you are happy with the products before purchasing from our secure online ordering system.

Extensive developments of CNC technology has meant ever more dynamic and complex related driving elements are now required, and it is for this reason that Rino Industries Ltd of Chesterfield have a range of metal bellows couplings to accommodate this.
They have considerably proven their worth when used at highly controlled dynamic drives. They are used wherever two rotating opposite shafts are to be connected frictionally and backlash free. The most important characteristic of these types of couplings is that they can be mounted very easily and fixing of the hubs is affected only by simply tightening the fastening screws. This is why the couplings can also be easily mounted to inaccessible locations.
Contrary to the AK series, the AKD and AKN couplings can be supplied with adjusting spring grooves, and clamping is designed in a way as to guarantee that the torque transfer without adjusting spring grooves is absolutely backlash free, even with high speeds. Any misalignment of the shafts is therefore compensated and acoustic noise of the motor or the drive is reduced by acoustic damping.
They are highly suitable for use at numerically controlled machinery and equipment, packaging machinery and transporting equipment. Both types of couplings are within a torque range of 18-500Nm and within a shaft diameter range of 10-60mm. The couplings are also easily made to customer’s specifications.

The characteristics of the bellows coupling can be modified by varying the number and spacing of convolutions. This type of coupling has high torsional stiffness and may be used in any drive system where high levels of torsional integrity are essential. Typical applications include encoder drives and closed loop servo systems.

Precision motion control applications require mechanically tight systems, especially between motors, driven loads, and feedback devices, to ensure accurate positioning. Such systems often require shaft couplings that are both torsionally rigid, to accurately transmit rotational position and laterally flexible to accommodate shaft misalignment.
Servometer couplings exhibit both low windup due to the bellows' radial rigidity, and low side thrust due to the bellows' lateral flexibility. Other coupling types have either low windup or low side thrust, but not both.
Since the flexible element is a bellows, the coupling can absorb parallel shaft misalignments of 0.068 in., angular misalignments as large as 31°, or axial movements of 0.230 in. while transmitting torque. Servometer's stock lines of flexible shaft couplings are available with stainless steel hub bore diameters ranging from .079 in. (2 mm) to 1.0 in. (25.4 mm), and with torque capabilities ranging from 2.0 in-oz (1.4 N-cm) to 4000 in-oz (2825 N-cm). Outside diameters range from 0.250 in. (6.35 mm) to 2.40 in. (61 mm) and overall lengths from 0.480 in. (12.19 mm) to 2.16 in. (54.9 mm). Specialized dynamic requirements can be custom designed to fit customer specifications.
Some unique characteristics of Servometer bellows-type flexible shaft couplings are:
- Extremely low elastic windup
- Zero backlash
- Zero cyclic speed variation during 360° rotation
- Minimal side loading
Typical applications include:
- Encoders
- Resolvers
- Servos
- Motion control instrumentation
- Robotics
- CNC machine tools
- Precision positioning

- special design available on request
The size of the coupling should be selected so that the nominal torque is greater than the highest torque to be regularly transmitted. (Acceleration or load torque). The shaft misalignments must not exceed the previously mentioned values. Otherwise this will limit the working life of the coupling.

These torsionally stiff couplings serve for the connection of two shaft ends compensating for angular and parallel misanlignment as well as axial backlash. They are used for the backlash-free and precise angular drive of:
-potentiometers / angle encoders
-resolvers / transducers
-low powered drives
The mounting of the coupling onto the shaft ends is achieved by two set screws each with one cup point per hub. In the case of a smaller than indicated size of bore, an accurate transmission or peak-torque is no longer guaranteed. Larger borings can be supplied on request.
