A boiler supplies energy to a thermal transfer liquid in order to heat, vaporize or superheat it.
Hot water and superheated water boilers are used principally for interior space heating. Saturated vapor boilers are used in industrial heat exchangers or in processes requiring direct use of steam. Superheated steam is used primarily to run turbines. Thermal fluid (usually oil) boilers are capable of reaching elevated temperatures.
Boilers use a variety of combustible liquid (fuel oil), gaseous or solid fuels (grate, fluidized bed, pulverized coal boilers). Electric boilers use immersed resistance elements to heat the fluid, though they are little-used because of operating expense. Waste heat boilers operate like heat exchangers, recovering heat from a hot fluid (exhaust or process gas, etc.)
A boiler is chosen on the basis of its power, its energy source and its operating parameters (fluid output temperature and pressure).
