A jaw coupling is a flexible, elastic coupling. It transmits torque between two imperfectly aligned shafts without loss of rotational speed. It also compensates for torque variations while damping shocks and vibrations.
Jaw couplings are used wherever torque must be transmitted between two imperfectly aligned shafts while damping shocks and vibrations.
Some jaw couplings use an elastomer element in compression, while in others it is in shear. The former offers more rigidity and precision, but the latter better dampens vibrations.
Choice will depend on:
- Torque and speed to be transmitted
- Shaft misalignment
- Load type: requiring torque fluctuation compensation (flexible elastic absorption) or perfectly synchronized (flexible, no-twist coupling)
- Size, available space, noise, disassembly
- Environment, temperature and other external factors
- Dampens vibrations
- Compensates for misalignment
- Compact
- Variable velocity during acceleration
