A platinum temperature sensor is a resistance temperature detector (RTD) probe. Platinum's electrical resistance varies in a nearly linear fashion over a wide temperature range.
ApplicationsThese sensors are used for temperature regulation in heating, ventilation and air conditioning. They also are found in process control in the agribusiness, chemical, refining and automobile industries.
TechnologiesIn general, the sensor consists of a metallic film over a plastic or ceramic support, an economical use of precious metal. The probe, a thin cylinder, may be rigid or flexible and of variable length. RTD response time is slower than with some other systems and the necessary excitation current can generate heat.
The most commonly used types are the Pt100 (100 ohms resistance at 0° C) and the Pt1000. Classes include B, A, 1/3DIN, 1/5DIN and 1/10DIN. A Class B Pt100 is accurate to within ±0.3° C at 0° C, half the precision of Class A.
The sensor may have two, three or four wires. The third wire indicates the voltage drop between the probe and the measuring instrument. The fourth wire improves accuracy. Some models are equipped with measurement electronics which transmit a 4-20 mA or 0-10 V signal.
Choice will depend on the range of temperatures to be measured, response time, measuring environment, pressure tolerance, dimensions, mounting and connection mode.
