A latch is a closure mechanism frequently found on doors and windows. There is a pivoting or sliding part, usually on the leaf, and another part on the frame or stationary element of the structure. The word catch is sometimes used to designate a latch.

TechnologiesThe toggle latch rotates around a pivot point, be it a quarter turn or another distance. Some have a handle. The cam lock latch exerts pressure when closed to prevent the mobile element banging against the stationary one. The mobile cam is shaped to apply force when it contacts the fixed part. A compression latch can be opened by a key designed to fit its notch. It can also have a lock.
The draw latch closes the two elements by pulling them toward one another. A spring latch is held closed by a spring. It is opened by pulling on its mobile part. Another model is held closed by spring-loaded jaws. Other models are held closed by magnets or friction between two spheres. Electric latches are activated by an electrical control.
