Description

Overview
The guided insertion thermal flowmeter METPOINT®️ FLM measures volumetric (and mass) flow in compressed air and gas lines by inserting a probe under pressure via a standard process fitting. The sensor is designed for fast integration into existing systems and is positioned centrally in the pipe so the medium flows optimally around the probe.

Principle of operation
Two temperature sensors are aligned in flow direction. The first measures process temperature; the second is electrically heated by approx. +40 K relative to the first. When volumetric or mass flow increases, cooling of the heated sensor rises and the electrical power required to maintain the temperature difference increases. This heating power is proportional to mass flow and is converted to volumetric flow using measured values and the pipe inner diameter.

Sensor technology
  • Two temperature sensors (reference and heated sensor)
  • Controlled electric heating element to maintain a fixed ΔT (≈ +40 K)
  • Conversion of heating power to mass flow and to volumetric flow based on pipe inner diameter

Variants and features
  • SF13: available with measurement sections for various pipe diameters; supplied with calibration certificate for the selected diameter
  • SF53: pre-calibrated for 53.1 mm pipe inner diameter (universal sensor); can be adjusted/calibrated on request for other diameters
  • LED display variant (economy): indicates e.g. need for recalibration (annual). Sensor configuration can only be performed in production or later using a BDL data logger

Advantages and applications
  • Accurate end-of-line monitoring to optimize energy management and reduce compressed-air losses
  • Provides data for analysis, documentation and decision-making (identify savings, overloads, detect leaks)
  • Simple integration into existing compressed-air systems via standard process fitting
  • Suitable for consumption measurement, leak detection and allocation of consumption to production units

Installation and usage notes
The probe must be inserted to the correct depth so it sits centered in the pipe and the medium flows optimally around the sensor. SF13 units are delivered calibrated for the selected diameter; SF53 is pre-calibrated for Ø 53.1 mm and can be recalibrated on request. Some configurations (e.g. LED version) require a BDL data logger for parameterization or subsequent adjustment.
