Description

Description
The Oesterle Mar Tester Model 435 S is a manual adhesion and scratch-resistance tester designed for evaluating the adhesion of printed scales, numbers and markings and for blunt-impact scratch testing on coated surfaces. It is particularly suitable for testing dial inscriptions and scaled indication fittings used in vehicle cockpits.

Design and function
The 435 S differs from Model 435 by the direction of movement of the test body: the test direction is rotated 90°. The test element corresponds in shape to the 435 version and is supplied as a steel central section of a disc. The test body is mounted on a bolt and preloaded by an internal helical spring to an adjustable force between 0 and 20 N. Three interchangeable springs allow selection of three force ranges. Guide wheels ensure correct alignment on the specimen while the rigid test tool applies the preset force.

Scope of application
The instrument is suitable for testing the adhesion of almost all printed scales, numbers, letters and marks lying on scale plates. For scratch-resistance testing it is recommended for surfaces where the Hardness Test Rod 318 (even with a 1 mm tip) is too aggressive.

Method of operation
Check that the test element is tightly fixed. Set the required force with the locking screw slider. Place the 435 S perpendicular to the test surface or beside the raised coating, press down until the guide wheels touch the surface, and move the instrument in the rolling direction of the wheels over the specimen. Select a testing speed appropriate to the product. For adhesion tests the result is the force in Newton at which the coating loses adhesion; for scratch-resistance tests the result is the maximum force in Newton at which no trace is left on the surface.
