Description

Overview Squareworx® porcupine cutters are helical shell mills with offset, stacked indexable inserts designed for high metal removal rates and extended tool life. Three cutter models provide a high number of teeth for even chip evacuation and very high feed rates. Internal coolant supply is standard.

Indexable inserts The cutters use Squareworx® indexable inserts with four cutting edges per insert. Short insert geometry produces short chips and ensures smooth cutting with high-quality surface finishes. The soft-cutting, positive geometry reduces cutting forces and machining time. Cutting materials are available in multiple grades to suit different applications.

Design and sizes Available as shell cutters in diameters Ø 40 mm, Ø 50 mm and Ø 66 mm, each in two cutting lengths: 1×D and 1.5×D. Tool holders are manufactured from a special alloy for durability and corrosion resistance. Fixing screw included.

Processing types
  • Face milling
  • Angled plunging
  • Helical milling
  • Slot milling
  • Pocket milling
  • Sharp corner milling

Highlights 1. Axial angle 90°
2. Short insert geometry for short chips

Features
  • Corner radius r = 0.8 mm
  • Economical: four cutting edges per insert
  • High tooth count enables high feed rates
  • Positive geometry for smooth, quiet cutting
  • Vibration damping in unstable conditions
  • Made from over 80% recycled steel to reduce environmental impact
  • Special alloy tool holders for high durability and corrosion resistance

Materials Suitable for roughing and high-performance machining across most machinable materials:
  • Steel — unalloyed/structural, normal tool steels, difficult-to-machine tool steels
  • Stainless steel — all grades
  • Cast iron — grey, spheroidal graphite, tempered
  • Non-ferrous metals & plastics — aluminium, copper, graphite, engineering plastics
  • Super alloys & titanium alloys — high-temperature alloys, titanium grades

Application notes Short inserts generate short chips and promote a smooth cut. The 90° axial angle combined with positive geometry ensures stable running and high process reliability on a variety of machines. Low sensitivity to oscillation makes these cutters well suited to unstable machining conditions and diverse applications.
