Resilient Metal Seals
Metal-to-metal seals: the innovative route in static sealing
Process developments over the past thirty years, demanding ultra high vacuum, high temperatures and pressures, have driven the need for advanced technology seals. Michel Le François, Research and Development Manager of Sealing Technology business Garlock, explains how metal-to-metal gaskets have evolved to comply with the most demanding requirements.

Metal Seals/Resilient Metal Seals are designed for applications that require temperature and chemical resistance beyond that of even Parofluor Series elastomers. These seals are offered in many cross-sections, including "C," "U," "E," and "V," with spring-energized variations.
Parker S-Shape and Omega Metal Seals are high performance, resilient metal seals intended for separable joint type applications requiring
resistance to temperature and pressure extremes, resistance to corrosive fluids, zero leakage and exceptionally long life.
The Parker S-Shape Metal Seal features low seating load, high resilience. They are self energizing and pressure assisted. Parker S-Shape Metal Seals are reusable and require a very simple cavity design.
The high strength base metal "spring" is coated with a softer sealing material. When compressed between flat surfaces, the spring seal forces the soft coating material into the mating surface roughness, blocking all potential leak paths. Once initiated, the intimate contact is maintained by the seal's resilience, overcoming the effects of temperature, pressure, flange separation and reduction of bolt torque.
The Parker O-Seal Division also produces two additional types of resilient metal seals for use in super-critical sealing of nuclear, aerospace and aircraft engine applications. Both the Parker Mark I and Mark II Metal Seals are available in a wide range of base metals and surface coatings from PTFE to gold plating. For "zero leakage" applications, the Parker Mark I is
recommended and is available in either internal or external pressure versions, depending upon customer requirements.
The cavity for a Parker SShape Metal Seal must provide controlled squeeze, seal location, adequate sealing surface and structural support.
Parker S-Shape Metal Seals are recommended for use in applications beyond the limits of elastomeric O-ring seals. Typical applications for the Parker S-Seal include jet engine fuel and exhaust seals, nuclear couplings, cryogenics, bakeable vacuu hardware, steam systems, turbine engines, cylinder heads and plastics processing equipment. Rings & Bushing
Manufacturing a customized seal ring in link with specifications, and machining it to the required degree of flatness are not major engineering challenges. The problem is that the ring must remain flat to function regardless of application and environment. Wear resistance, toughness, corrosion resistance, and resistance to thermal shocks are the key material properties required for long-lasting, all-perfect pump function.
The unique combination of all these material characteristics has made cemented carbide the most widely used material in pump seals and bearing in the sewage, mining and process sectors. Moreover, there is further potential to tailor cemented carbide for a vast range of environment applications.
Cemented carbide can be made harder than the hardest steel, but yet remain tougher then ceramics.
Sandvik grades offer a complete set of properties
- Excellent hardness / toughness compromise guarantees outstanding wear, erosion and shock resistance.
- Robust surfaces
- Low friction coefficient and high mechanical strength.
- High thermal conductivity and superior thermal resistance.
- Resistant to handling and easy to assemble
- Sandvik grades support brazing, mechanical assembling, shrink fitting, press fitting and gluing.

VITOSEAL multi-purpose vinyl foam sealing tapes - ensure permanent air- and water-tightness, sound absorption, heat and cold insulation
VITOSEAL consists of an one-side self-adhesive vinyl foam with a paramount resistance to ageing and weathering conditions.
The flexible and elastic consistency of these products permits an easy adaptation of uneven surfaces, allowing thus an optimal sealing.
The water-tightness is already achieved at a compression of about 30 %. VITOSEAL vinyl foam tapes show an elevated vapour diffusion tightness. In general, they are resistant to water, fungal attacks and oxidation; in addition, they are resistant to diluted acids and weak alkaline solutions in commercially available brands with normal concentration.
These tapes should not be applied in direct contact with plexiglass. When entering into contact with plexiglass, it is advisable to change over to other foams.

MAPESIL LM : Single-component, neutral cross-linking, low modulus silicone sealant for movement joints with maximum 25% expansion of the initial size. Flexible sealing of interior and exterior expansion joints in ceramic wall tiling as well as for windows, mirrors, metals, PVC, polycarbonate etc., both intermediate and for sealing to wood, concrete, etc. Highly suitable for flexible sealing of external façades particularly those covered with limestone sensitive-to-acids. Does not stain. Unsuitable for continuous water immersion. Consumption depending on the size of the joint.
MAPESIL Z : Universal acetic-cross-linking silicone sealant. Mapesil Z is formulated for use as a sealant and for forming perfectly elastic gaskets between various elements used in construction, mechanical engineering, ship-building, automobile manufacturing, and other industries. Mapesil Z is a silicone sealant with acetic cross-linking in a thixotropic paste easily applied horizontally or vertically. Mapesil Z cross-links at ambient temperatures, forming an elastic material. When applied on concrete or wood, first apply Primer FD. Colours: clear, white, gray. Consumption calculated according to the volume of the joint and the density of the sealant (1.00 g/cm3 for clear and 1.24 g/cm3 for coloured compounds).
