Aerotech%u2019s "U-channel" brushless linear servomotors have proven ideal for robots, actuators, tables/stages, fiberoptics/photonics alignment and positioning, assembly, machine tools, semiconductor equipment, electronic manufacturing, vision systems, and in many other industrial automation applications. Aerotech linear motors are direct drive and consist of a noncontacting forcer coil and "U-channel" rare-earth magnet track. This design eliminates backlash, windup, wear, and maintenance issues associated with ball screw, belt, and rack and pinion based motion control and positioning systems. The noncontact design of the forcer and magnet track results in a maintenance-free system.

Linear Permanent Magnet Motors
Overview
Linear motors have been around as long as any other kind of electric motor, and have had their supporters and detractors
over the years for a wide range of linear applications, from rams and material movement to luggage handling and funfair rides.
Historically, linear motors have been very successful in the semi-conductor manufacturing industry and now their suppliers are making forays into many other markets, with increasing success. The main barrier to their growth has been initial cost, which is generally higher than the traditional servomotors.
Unidrive has been applied successfully with a wide range of linear motor types, from a diverse range of suppliers. Contact your local Drive Centre for help in applying Unidrive with linear motors.

Linear Motors
Operations requiring super large synchronous servo motors still demand the functionality and features of regular sized motors. Ideal for industrial machines, including electric presses, these motors provide significantly lower power consumption than standard industrial motors yet are still based on the advanced design of the Alpha is series featuring GE Fanuc's renowned high acceleration, high accuracy technologies.

Linear Stepper Motor, Single Axis - LMSS series
Baldor's open loop linear stepper motor provides the most economical linear motor positioning package. The "forcer" consists of a 2 or 4 phase motor assembly encapsulated in an aluminum housing supported by bearings. The "platen" consists of photo-chemically etched teeth on a steel bar available in lengths cut per customer specification. The LMSS series provides forces to 220 N (50 lbs); speeds to 1.5 - 2 m/sec (890 in/sec); acceleration to 1 G.
Linear Stepper Motor, Dual Axis - LMDS series
Baldor's dual axis stepper package provides open loop positioning along two axis of travel. An integrated air bearing system floats the "forcer" less than 25 micrometers (0.001 inch) above the photo-chemically etched steel plate. Preload for the bearing system is provide by the magnetic attractive force between the forcer and the platen. The LMDS may be mounted face up or inverted. A position verification system is available to close the loop.
