According to DIN 53316 standard, a circular test piece of the elastomer to be tested is traversed under constant contact pressure and at a constant speed through a defined abrasion distance across an abrasive cloth attached to the surface of a rotating cylinder and the loss in mass is determined.
The abrasive grade of the cloth is determined by the same procedure as the loss in mass of the standard elastomer and is required to lie within a specified range of values .
The loss in mass of the elastomer under test converted to volume loss from its calculated density , and the volume loss then referred to a specific nominal abrasive grade .

SANTAM SAT -500 Abrasion Tester used to determine resistance of elastomers under frictional forces .
Relative velocity between two contacted surfaces create frictional forces which caused volumetric loss of the weak surface .
Materials such as rubbers in work (tires, drive belts, shoe soles and heels) contact with solid materials and abrasion will be occurred .
Abrasion continuation is a failure problem and it should be considered in design and production. Abrasion Test based on DIN 53316 is a good criterion to evaluate the resistance of rubber due to frictional wearing .
