A gear reducer is a gearing assembly that can reduce rotational speed while increasing torque in a mechanical system, or increase speed while reducing torque (in which case it is called a multiplier).
ApplicationsThese devices are extremely common in a wide range of mechanical transmission applications, including automobile and motorcycle transmissions, in machine tools, variable speed drives and gear motors.
TechnologiesThere are four basic types of gear reducer:
- Straight (or straight sprocket, with straight-cut or cylindrical teeth)
- Worm gear (worm and wheel), with straight or helical teeth
- Bevel gear, with straight or helical teeth
- Planetary (epicyclic) gear
The term helical refers to tooth profile. Helical teeth can be found on any gear type. Note that in a rotating mechanism, speed and torque are inversely proportional.
Choice of gear reducer will depend on the speed and torque of both the input and output shafts. These data can be used to calculate the reduction ratio. Another factor is the relative orientation of the input and output shafts: coaxial, parallel, perpendicular, convergent or not.
