A hinge is a pivoting assembly connecting two objects. Many consist of three elements:
- a stationary part attached to the fixed object
- a pin, the axis of the pivot
- the mobile part attached to the mobile object
Hinges are most commonly found on doors and windows. However, they also are used in many mechanisms requiring a pivoting articulation between two elements, one of which is usually stationary.
Hinges vary according to their range of motion, size and appearance. They include friction, spring, concealed, cam, flag and other types. Certain hinges can hold the moving element in either the open or the closed position.
Choice will depend on range of motion, size, mounting configuration and appearance.
